Chinatown itself is a location full of rich history, architecture and environment that very much remind us of the alleyways of Taiwan/Hong Kong. It is a place where we find elements that is similar to “home” in a foreign place, and there are always surprises and secrets hidden in every corner. On top of that, Chinatown is growing into a neighborhood where creativity is happening, whether it is in the form of art, food or the community that resides in it. The neon light at night juxtaposed next to traditional style Chinese buildings, this place is rich with atmospheric texture. We love to see humans connect through experiences and interactions. At the end of the day, we want people to feel connected with the society as a whole and also feel a sense of belonging in this charming city of Los Angeles. Sounds grand yet so intimate, it is an art form that helps us see humanity through different lenses. We often find ourselves connecting with characters and the stories that are told on the big silver screen.
On August 24th, 2019, Chinatown Cinema hosted the very first movie night presenting the modern classic Hong Kong cinema film “Kung Fu Hustle (功夫)”. We also showcased the short film “Kiss of the Rabbit God (兔兒神)” by Andrew Thomas Huang. Bridging classic Chinese cinema to modern Asian cinema, we hope this event can bring the Los Angeles community together. We strive to represent and inspire the next generation to understand that Asian culture is rich on its own, but it is also a big part of modern American culture.
